The term 12 volt battery does not actually represent the power of that battery. It is just a convenient term used to set one battery apart from another. A fully charged battery of 12 volts will measure about 12.6 volts between terminals. The other parts of the battery are heat sealed and make of special materials.
Make sure to verify the level of the fluid in every chamber. Then you have to fill up the chamber using distilled or de-ionized water.
These are some things you have to look for when you are doing maintenance on the motorcycle battery.
- verify the level of the electrolyte in the battery. Wear some protective glasses and also some gloves to prevent hurting yourself. Also, do that only in a well ventilated space. The fumes are toxic.
- the top of the battery has to be free from grime
- the cables, the clamps and the other elements must be checked for damage
- you have to clean the connectors and the terminals so that the battery will work properly
- take out all excessive sedimentation, mossing and sulfation from the battery
- the exhaust tube must not have clogs
- when you are done replacing the caps, you can test the battery with a voltmeter and a hydrometer
If you plan to put the battery on storage for a while, make sure its surface is not conductive, so place it on wood. Do not store them on a metal surface because after a while they will get discharged.
Here are some motorcycle battery maintenance tips:
- Do not let the battery run of power. Always keep it charged.
- If you see the light going dim, recharge the battery.
- Be careful on how you connect the cables.
- Do not forget to put the gloves and goggles on.
- Do not put tap water because it can be contaminated.
